Small-cap stocks can be a potential business ideas key part of a well-diversified portfolio. Whether you need them or if they are appropriate depends on your own unique investing goals and situation. Some investors may find their growth potential appealing. Others might be turned off by their risk. This table illustrates the relative ranges of the large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap market strata using the Standard & Poor's index view of the market. KCR thinks the appeal of moving down the groups is reasonably obvious. The major complaint we could see coming from a cursory observation of the indexes are the elevated PE ratios and the lower ROAs of the small caps. We do not profess to be experts in Large Value vs. Small Value (yet!) but a cursory examination of the two benchmarks is informative. Small caps historically have a relatively high correlation — meaning they tend to move in lockstep — with large-cap stocks. But which group is performing better than the other over a given time frame fluctuates regularly, based on factors such as macroeconomic growth and politics.
