Ketamine nasal spray, pills sometimes referred to as intranasal esketamine, is used as a nasal spray to treat patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). The main type of ketamine used is SPRAVATO® (esketamine) CIII nasal spray, which is administered in combination with an oral antidepressant.

More than one in 10 Americans takes an antidepressant to help subdue the debilitating symptoms of clinical depression.

But for many of them, that medication doesn’t work. The feelings of sadness, lack of enjoyment, hopelessness, loss of energy, and changes in sleep and appetite can’t be shaken.

A new medication coming to the market may help these people with so-called treatment-resistant depression. It’s a nasal spray called esketamine (Spravato) that was recently approved by the FDA.

“For people who are not getting enough help from currently available antidepressants, this could be something that could be added to that and possibly get a better response, in the short-term,” says psychiatrist NASAL SPRAY Amit Anand, MD, who is also Vice-Chair for Research at the Center for Behavioral Health and Director of the Mood Disorders Program.
