Crowns are an important restorative treatment that can be used for a number of different reasons. A crown can be used to restore the appearance and functionality of a damaged or broken tooth. In some cases, a dental crown is used to support an unhealthy or decayed tooth. This helps preserve the healthy portion of the remaining tooth. A crown can also be used to protect the tooth from further injury or to keep bacteria from entering a root canal. Whatever the reason, dental crowns are an extremely common procedure that are performed by dentists TLC Dental to help maintain a beautiful smile!

Crowns come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. Each type of crown has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it is important to speak with your dentist about the best option for your specific needs. Parmer Lane offers three different types to meet the needs of our patients:

Porcelain crowns look very natural and are very common. This is due to the fact that porcelain closely resembles a patient's natural teeth in both color and texture. Porcelain crowns can also last several years if they are properly cared for.

Zirconia is another popular type of dental crown that has become very popular for its durability and aesthetic properties. Zirconia can withstand high pressure and is very strong. This is great if your tooth has had a root canal or a full-coverage filling. Zirconia crowns are also very aesthetically pleasing and have the ability to resemble a natural tooth in both shape and color.

A metal-ceramic combination crown is another common type. It is a combination between ceramic and metal. This type of crown combines the best of both metal and ceramic, making it an extremely durable and strong option. It is important to remember that ceramic can chip. We recommend avoiding foods or beverages that are particularly damaging to teeth.

In some cases, full gold crowns are still used because of their durability. These crowns can become brittle with time and may require more tooth structure to be removed than other types.

The newest technology in dental crowns is the CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technique. This method does not require messy goop, but instead uses a scanner to create a 3-D model of your teeth. This is then sent off to a milling machine that fabricates the crown from ceramic of a shade pre-determined by your dentist. The resulting restoration is then bonded to the prepared tooth with a resin, which is hardened by high-energy curing lights. This process allows us to provide a strong and long-lasting dental crown in a single visit! The CAD/CAM procedure also allows for less damage to healthy parts of the tooth.
